Steps to Overcoming Anxiety

Fear is a very powerful emotion and it can have a strong effect on your body and mind. Fear can create a lot of strong response signals when our brain senses an emergency situation. For example, if you saw something catch fire your fight, flight, or freezer response would kick in. However, it’s not uncommon to feel anxious when you start a new job, go on a date, or take an exam.

Anxiety can often last for a short period of time. However, anxiety attacks can last a lot longer. In some cases, you might even feel stuck in a cycle of anxiety. This can affect your ability to sleep, travel, concentrate, eat, and even go shopping, go to work, or school. Anxiety can take hold of people and cause them to avoid all of those things that make them anxious. This can be the case even if it’s detrimental to their health.

Anxiety can feel quite frightening. It could cause you to:

  • Have a faster heartbeat
  • Have muscles that feel quite weak
  • Breath more quickly
  • Feel dizzy
  • Have a dry mouth
  • Sweat a lot
  • Feel very tense
  • Feel frozen to the spot
  • Find it hard to think about anything else

You may experience some or all of the above symptoms when you’re feeling anxious. This is because these symptoms are your body’s natural response to emergencies.

How Can Therapy Help for Anxiety?

If you’re looking for the best therapist to help with anxiety in Philadelphia, we can help you. We can use a range of therapies to ensure that you feel much safer when you’re having an anxiety attack. We will also help you to identify and challenge your negative thoughts. We do this so that you can work on replacing these thoughts with kinder, more realistic thoughts.

We might even ask you to expose yourself to anxiety-provoking situations. While being anxious is not pleasant, repeated exposure could help you. Through the exposure, you can become desensitized to those situations that make you feel anxious.

Our anxiety therapy can help you to deal with your anxious thoughts and feelings in a safe, secure, and constructive way.

But therapy can also help you if you or your partner have:

  • Assertiveness issues
  • Experience with trauma or abuse
  • Low sexual desire
  • Pain during sex
  • (Intimacy-related) performance anxiety
  • Relationship issues
  • Shame or guilt
  • Or any other issues that might be causing difficulties within your relationship.

What's the difference between normal anxiety and Anxiety Disorders?

While we've established that anxiety is an essential part of our survival mechanism, it's crucial to distinguish between normal and chronic anxiety. You might think of it as a see-saw. On one side, we have anxiety as a beneficial stimulus that keeps us alert. On the other side, when anxiety begins to permeate every aspect of our lives, creating an imbalance, it turns into a disorder.

An important clue about whether you're dealing with normal anxiety or an anxiety disorder is the six-month timing. If anxiety and its accompanying symptoms persist for six months or longer, it may be indicative of a deeper issue, such as an anxiety disorder.

There are a variety of treatments available for anxiety disorders, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), medication, and lifestyle changes. What works best will depend on your individual situation, but the first step is always reaching out and asking for help.

What therapy is best for anxiety?

There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to anxiety. Different treatment modalities can be used depending on your needs and goals.

Here are some of the most common therapies that you might consider:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This type of therapy focuses on identifying negative thought patterns or behaviors and replacing them with healthier ones.
  • Exposure Therapy: This particular form of therapy entails a systematic and gradual exposure to anxiety-inducing situations, ultimately leading to desensitization.
  • Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: These techniques can help you learn how to manage your emotions and react in the best possible way when anxious thoughts or feelings arise.
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): This type of therapy combines CBT and mindfulness to help you manage your emotions, thoughts, and reactions.

If you are looking for the best therapist to treat anxiety in Philadelphia, we can help. Our experienced team of therapists is here to provide you with the care and support that you need. We will work together to ensure that you find a treatment plan that works for you.

What therapist is best for anxiety?

When it comes to finding the best therapist for anxiety, you want someone who is experienced and knowledgeable in a variety of techniques. It’s important to find a therapist that listens to your individual needs and aims to create an environment where you feel safe and supported. Speak with your potential therapist about their experience in addressing anxiety-related issues before making any decisions. Also, make sure that you ask about their therapeutic approach and how they plan to help you achieve your goals.

Additionally, it is important to find a therapist who is patient and nonjudgmental. Your comfort with the therapist should be a major factor in determining who will be the best fit for you. If you do not see a time that works for you, please email us at info@healyourrootswellness.com and we will do our best to accommodate your schedule.

Do you accept insurance for therapy?

Currently, we are only accepting Highmark Blue Shield plans. Otherwise we are out of network and not accepting insurance. You are welcome to contact your insurance company directly to find out if you qualify for out-of-network reimbursement. You may then request an invoice or “superbill” to submit to them. Yes! If you're a licensed therapist (or will be licensed soon) reach out to us at info@healyourrootswellness.com. More information is available here.

I live outside the US, can I sign up?

No, unfortunately not. Due to licensing and regulation, you must reside in a US state in which your therapist is licensed.

Do you offer evening and weekend sessions?

Yes, we have found that evenings work better for many of our clients, and we are happy to accommodate. Some, but not all, of our therapists offer weekend sessions but will do my best to accommodate around your schedule.

In what states do you practice therapy (i.e. see clients)?

Our therapists are licensed to see clients residing in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Sign up for our mailing list to be informed when we start accepting clients in other states.

How often do we need to meet for therapy?

We typically recommend you meet with your therapist once a week or bi-weekly for the first few sessions and reassess collaboratively. This is dependent on therapeutic need, affordability and schedule availability.

What can I expect during my first session of therapy?

The first few sessions of individual, couples and sex therapy are for us to get to know one another. Our therapists will develop an understanding of who you are, what your concerns are, and what your life has looked like recently while you get familiar with your therapist, and their therapeutic approach. During this session we will take our time learning about all the different aspects of your life and upbringing.

Do you offer in-person sessions for therapy?

No, we are a digital first therapy and wellness destination. We only provide telehealth therapy, also known as online therapy. These are the same type of therapists you would meet with in person, but by providing telehealth services, we can provide our services to clients all over Pennsylvania - no longer requiring you to drive into the city, find parking, and then drive back afterwords. Telehealth therapy provides you with flexibility and access to amazing therapists all over Pennsylvania.

What is therapy like with you?

Our therapists are real people and won’t silently nod and say hmm and that’s interesting the entire session. We are here to support, guide, and sit with you in any emotion that comes up. We use humor and empathy to build connections while being direct in challenging you to grow. We are open to feedback and your honesty about what works and doesn’t work for you personally.
